2016 - Nominated for the Saskatchewan Young Readers' Choice Willow Awards
2016 - Alberta Rocky Mountain Book Awards
2017 - Finalist, Silver Birch Nonfiction Award
2017 - Silver Birch Nonfiction Honour Book
2018 - Texas Topaz Nonfiction List
This book is about point of view and the use of persuasive language. It presents animals that often inspire fear or revulsion, such as rats, snakes, spiders, cockroaches, sharks, leeches and a host of others. The book first presents each animal in a negative light and then a positive light. Readers are then asked to decide whether the animal is a friend or foe.
If you invite me to do a workshop about point of view and persuasive language, I will leave you with many follow-up activities to use with your students.
Since “Friend or Foe” was a Silver Birch nomination, I received a number of letters from students who enjoyed the book. Interestingly, several students were excited about the book because of the snake illustration on the cover. So much for the maxim “Don’t judge a book by its cover”!
"Top Ten Recommended Read in TD Summer Reading Club 2016"
"Etta Kaner's conversational, persuasive writing style allows readers to consider different viewpoints in a highly entertaining manner."
— The National Reading Campaign
"A fascinating book."
— School Library Journal
"A fun, interactive, and high-interest exploration of biology basics."

"I learned a lot of stuff. This is an awesome book!"
— Kids' Book Buzz
"Friend or Foe will be fun to read on one's own or to share with a friend...these accounts are good examples of valid pro/con arguments to get kids thinking critically, learning how to defend their own point of view, and to have empathy for the opinions of others. Highly recommended."
— Canadian Review of Materials
"Presents in turn a selection of destructive or disgusting habits, then beneficial behaviors."
— Kirkus
