This book is narrated by sportscasters Walrus and Cockatoo. Along with some comic relief, the pair provides the play-by-play commentary for seven sporting events. With a total of twenty-eight animals competing, each event, from high jump to weight lifting and swimming, pits a different group of four against one another.
This book will appeal to children who love to learn facts about the strongest, highest and fastest. In the classroom, it's a perfect introduction to science lessons on living things and their characteristics, with the interactive guessing element a great way to keep children engaged.
I loved writing all the puns for the characters in the text and the illustrations.
This book was also a great challenge. I wanted the narrators, Walrus and Cockatoo, to be sportscasters but I had no idea how to make them sound like sportscasters. So I watched countless videos of sports events to learn about language, situational behaviour and intonation. I hope you think Walrus and Cockatoo sound like real sportscasters when you read this book!
“Children will be fascinated by some of the animals' feats cataloged here and may even be curious to see how well they might do in comparison.”
— Kirkus
“Whereas most animal books for this age group focus on one particular animal or habitat, this is a good introduction to a broader range and the unusual strengths and abilities that come with it.”
— Booklist
“Young readers who are interested in sports and animals are going to thoroughly enjoy this cleverly presented book.”
— Through the Looking Glass Children’s Book Reviews
“Sidebars offer concise profiles of the competitors, including their classifications, habitats, and diets. Kaner makes the most of a fun premise…”
— Publishers Weekly
